Last week, Turkish authorities began arresting scores of individuals under anti-terror laws.  Among those arrested were over a dozen human rights lawyers.  The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that more than ten journalists were also arrested in these latest sweeps.

CPJ Deputy Director, Robert Mahoney, notes:

This latest round of arrests is a serious setback for press freedom in Turkey, which holds the dubious distinction of being the world’s leading jailer of journalists… Turkey should be emptying its jails of journalists, not filling them back up by using sweeping anti-terrorism laws.

According to the CPJ, “Turkey is the world’s worst jailer of journalists.”
